Hi all!
Before I share more recipes, I think it's best to take a moment to discuss tools and how I decided fresh is best!
Let me start with how I decided to make my own baby food. My son was pretty close to being 6 months old and all I kept reading in articles from www.babycenter.com was that babies like flavors too and their food doesn't have to be limited to the boring bland crud!! Yes the Hawaiian Delight is scrumdillyumptious, but I'm saying all babies want is just want some seasoning and herbs to spice it up. And speaking of spice babies like spicy food too (obviously not habanero flavored, but a touch of heat).
Let's Get back on topic, I decided to give baby food making a whirl. Don't get me wrong Sawyer on occasion gets the Hawaiian Delight among other store bought, but 90% of the food he eats is momma's fixins'. Anyway I figured I could try a few things and see how it goes. Another reason why I decided to go this route was I kept thinking to preserve the food to sell in the store it's probably packed with so much CRAP in order for it to be stocked on the shelves! Not to mention fresh always tastes best, hence "fresh is best." With that being said I started small and bought apricots, then brussel sprouts (yes I said brussel sprouts!), then bigger like broccoli and from then on I got addicted!
Now what you've been waiting for; let me discuss my best friends in the kitchen; the Cuisinart Mini Prep Plus Food Processor (4 cup). I didn't start out with this, but SOOO glad I have it now. I first started out with my trusted Oyster Mini Chopper. However I have had it for 4 years and it was on it's last leg (it had a crack and would leak EVERYWHERE). It was still usable but wasn't pureeing it to my liking. Groupon Goods, luck be have it had a deal for the Cuisinart. I figured I would splurge on the deal at $35 (retails around $60+), best Groupon deal I've bought yet! Let's say it does the job Grrreat! It can hold just the right amount (sometimes I have to do a double batch), and it purees it PERFECTLY! A little grind here, a little chop there...and VIOLA! My other tools consist of my handy dandy skimmer/strainer spoon and my medium and large pot! I also have at least 24, 4oz plastic containers. *tip DO NOT USE GLASS. Glass in the freezer is a no, no, the food could expand and crack the glass. Putting the food in glass jars could also result in developing botulism. That concludes my necessities in preparing and making Sawyer's food.
Can you believe that's all you need? Here I thought as a full time working mom this would certainly never last; considering I'm exhausted by 7:00pm chasing around a 7 month old speed crawler! But here I am so obsessed with making baby food, I had to express my success on how I am expanding my babys taste pallet.
Hope this helped to pursuad you to at least try it out.
Happy baby food making!
